      Abstract

      Knowledge of geometry and space is important for primary school pupils. However, they have difficulty to understand and learn these topics. The aim of this study is to identify Year Five pupils’ understanding of rectangular area and how they use that understanding to solve problems involving rectangular area. This case study involves five Year Five pupils from a primary school in Ipoh, Perak, selected through purposive sampling method. Radical constructivism is used as a background theory, whereas the data was collected through seven clinical interviews, recorded on video for each pupil. The research found that the pupils used two main ideas to provide meaning to the rectangular area, namely the idea of the quantity and measurement of distance or length of sides. The idea of quantity is applied in measurement involving certain number of one, two, or three dimensional tools, while the idea of measurement of distance or length of sides is applied in the measurement of rectangular area diagram when one, two, or three dimensional measurement tools were given or not given. In addition, the study found that the pupils were using three ideas to give meaning to problem solving involving rectangular area in various situations, that is idea of measuring the side lengths of rectangular diagram, the idea of measurement of dots, and the idea of number of sides. The first idea used in solving problems involving rectangular area, while other ideas were used to identify the diagram largest area. The pupils in this study measured length of sides in cm units to find the perimeter and area of rectangular diagram and also the volume of cuboids. The results of this study also showed that the pupils were unable to identify the similarities and differences between measurement tools of one, two, or three dimensions and the correct way to manipulate the measurement tools in order to determine the perimeter and area of rectangular diagram and the volume of cuboids. Furthermore, they lack clear knowledge to determine the perimeter and area of rectangular diagram and volume of cuboids. Hence, further study is necessary to clarify whether the understanding on rectangular area held by pupils were developed cognitively from primary and concrete level to higher level and abstract. Classroom teaching should focus on skills, procedural, and conceptual knowledge to assist pupils in their investigations, inquiries, observations, and strengthen their understanding on the rectangular area.
