    Abstract

    This study looks into the pedagogical aspects that influence social change from a Qur’anic perspective and the role of Bosnian Sheikh Mohammed Handzic as an example. This study has been divided into five chapters, in which the first chapter discusses the concept of the main terms in the study, which are change, cultivation, and society, followed by a brief biography of Handzic. As for the second chapter, the discussion was about the approach of the Holy Qur’an towards change, followed by an analysis of the actions of Handzic. The third and fourth chapters touched on the types of social changes, their reasons, and their stages, followed by the Islamic ruling towards change in certain aspects, followed by the stance of Handzic from them. The fifth chapter deals with the causes of social change and the role of cultivation therein, while also touching upon the fields of cultivation from the Qur’anic perspective with examples of Handzic’s endeavors. The methodology followed in this study is based on an objective analytical approach, having derived the Qur’anic verse that mention the themes of this study whether overtly or in essence, accompanied by the exegesis and examples of that from the life of Handzic whenever applicable. This study aims to reveal the real nature of social change and the cultivating role therein, while also clarifying the fields of cultivation that are focused upon in the Qur’an for the attainment of change, which namely are: creed, purification, intellectual preparation, and vocational preparation. Also, this study aims to reveal the role of humans in the process of change, and to identify the Qur’anic pedagogical methods in changing the individual and the society while shedding light upon the main features in the life of Handzic as a social reformer, his cultivating methods in attaining change and his stance from some of its types. Handzic gave great attention to the fields of pedagogy and education, not leaving a field of education that is of concern to the Muslims without writing about it. Through his pioneering efforts one sees that he applied cultivating methods in accordance to the Qur’anic approach as he would initiate change in accordance to urgency, while his call for reform in terms of creed was one of the dimensions of his endeavors and his rejection for prohibited types of change was notable, as his stance towards that was very clear. He also focused on the importance of changing behavior during the sermons and lessons he delivered at the masjids, closed meetings and educational establishments, notably when he was working as a teacher and mentor. His numerous publications that enriched the Islamic libraries in Bosnia stand as a testimony of that, as they reveal his vast knowledge in many of the sciences pertaining to Islam, literature and history, in addition to being a reformer and mentor in other social spheres.
