      Abstract

Muhammad Muhsin Khan’s English translation of the Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhāri is considered one of two complete translations of this book. However, it contains certain gaps that need to be filled up. In order to put the translation of archaic words under scrutiny, the Chapter of al-Libās is culled from it. As for the methodology, the textual analysis is adopted to specify the concordance between the chapter and its translation. From this point, this research concludes that: Firstly, the translation of the Hadith must abide by the norms established in the field of hadith particularly regarding the archaic words. Among those standards are: the mastering of both source and target languages, absorbing the science of Hadith, matching the translation to the realities of the contemporary culture. There is no objection to set a team of translators from different disciplines; for every member to contribute in his field of expertise. Secondly, Hadith translation into English language should be given priority; due to the fact of the widespread of this language. Thirdly, The types of the translations in this chapter were classified into eight categories, namely; the accurate, the inaccurate, the wrong, the less- (Arabic) grammatical committed, the drop in translation, the mere transliteration for local nomenclature without translation, the mere transliteration despite the presence of its English equivalent, and the less appropriate translation. Fourthly, the implications deduced from flaws in the translation are the occurrence of loopholes for claimants of contradictions and irrationality in hadith, the distance Muslims stay from benefits of some herbs noticed in hadith and misinformation regarding Islamic decrees and Arab culture in the lifetime of Prophet Muḥammad (p.b.u.h.).
