Abstract
The relationship between the parents and their children has become strained in recent times. They no longer understand each other. The Holy Quran is an eternal book that deals with the issues facing the human beings. To address such problematic relationship, the Quran narrates many stories of the prophets and the righteous people that deal with such topic, and points to essential values that they, as parents, tried to instill in their children. This study has been divided into five chapters that deal with the topic from two aspects. The first is a theoretical aspect where Quranic verses relevant to the topic were identified and explained. The second is a practical aspect where a questionnaire has been specifically designed for, and applied on, a sample of parents at Hamad bin Khalid AI Thani foundation for Quranic teaching in Qatar, in order to assess their awareness of these values, and to evaluate the children's issues. This study is distinguished from previous studies in that it dealt with the relationship between the parents and the children only, and with its emphasis on the practical aspect of the issue. The problem and the questions of this study were: What were the values that the parents tried to instill in their children according to the Quranic text? How much of these values do the parents possess in real life nowadays (extracted from the reality of the parents in Hamad Bin Khalid AI Thani foundation for Quranic teaching in Qatar)? What were the issues that the parents and children faced? And what were the proposed solutions? The study aimed to present adequate answers to these issues and questions, by highlighting the formative and social values adopted by the parents in raising their children, by evaluating the reality of the parents and their share of knowledge and possession of these values, by revealing the major issues the parents face when raising their children, and by proposing adequate solutions to those issues. The study has adopted multiple approaches to achieve its aims, vis: the inductive approach to traces all the Quranic stories that deal with the relationship of the parents with their children, the deductive approach to extract and deduce such values, the analytical approach to break and link the elements of the topic, and finally by the descriptive approach to collect the data from the study sample. The study has arrived at two important conclusions. One is that there exist in these stories Quranic values that can treat the troubled relationship between parents and children in our contemporary time and can treat the children's problems and raise them up to be good humans. The other conclusion is that this study is crucially needed in order to renew the religious discourse to make it more acceptable by the recipients.
